My Monologue Moment on Artist, Writers and Money

George Lucas once shared at a Comic-con event where he received a standing ovation; “Once you give it up.” then that’s it. And it was in reference to selling the Star Wars Franchise to Disney. George Lucas sold Lucasfilm Ltd., which included the Star Wars franchise, to The Walt Disney Company for $4.05 billion in cash and stock on December 21, 2012. The deal was finalized on April 3, 2014.
But there were actually several points George Lucas talked about that I want to also interject a few thoughts of mine. These are not thoughts I’ve had for some time in my creative musings. My creative musings where a creative writer can think about a whole bunch of stuff for inspiration and what you’re going to do.
At the Comic-Con, George Lucas commended the Walt Disney Company for their special effects and the technology used in the newer stories. Then Mr. Lucas expressed himself on what he didn’t care too much for in the direction of the stories.
Did you know George Lucas still own and retain the rights of the first six stories he created; as we may still call them the originals? No, he did not sell his original storylines.
◆ He wants them to stay the same.
◆ He doesn’t want them placed in the newer digital formats.
He feels they may lose the concept of what Star Wars was in the first place; like the force, the audience not needing to be so grown up, but actually was so that children could enjoy the movie.
He realizes is that, yes, after he sold the rights that only the canon of Star Wars were protected. He then he shared in conversation, He “Gave it up, gave it up.”
And so you know, that’s that.
Now, I’m going to talk about that once he gave it up, he gave it up; JUST what does this mean in what Mr. Lucas received in exchange for selling the rights?
The Midichlorians
A lot of people didn’t know about this! What am I talking about? I’m talking about The Force’s connection with Midichlorians (microscopic intelligent lifeforms. It is explained in the movie how people are born with these aliens, amoebas, or lifeforms. The Jedi also used a small measuring tool to test the blood stream. And that’s how they were able to find out Anakin would be strong in the force.
Where in the world did this idea (heresy of Star Wars cannon) come from? Well, in interviews, George Lucas actually stated that he thought of the Midichlorians back in the 1970s. Now, Midichlorians weren’t addressed at all in the first episodes of the movie.
You may say, “Talk about having a lot of good ideals with creative musings; Mr. Lucas proved this.”
Another man, Gene Roddenberry, boy, I tell you what, you can find out a lot of his creative musings turned out to be great story ideas! However, with all due respect, there are some creative musings that weren’t good to come back or revisit in my opinion.
I’m saying in this case that George Lucas’ ideal of the midichlorians took decades to be highlighted. You know what I’m going to say? They could have waited a few more decades to elaborate on Midichlorians , if not ever.
For the record, I love(d) George Lucas’ concept of the The Force, first presented in the 1970s; it just sits right with me!
The midichlorians ideal, I just didn’t feel was necessary whatsoever, you see for the story. My understanding whole takeaway from the first episodes in the first place happens to be this:
Training, discipline of the mind, and the spirit. That’s all what is needed and the skies are the limits. It means there would be no limits.
By bringing in the Midichlorians, it turned The Force’s mystical and spiritual importance into physical strengths and weaknesses.
Before George Lucas gave anything up so to speak; to Disney; just how many lawyers were involved? How many hours of negotiation were involved? How much time, energy, and money built up the process? How many clear cut details were written out? Notes, memos, etc.
You can believe George Lucas knew what was going on with his baby, as he called them.
These people were trying to buy or adopt or purchase his baby.
OK, so once he gave up the rest of his babies (leaving the nest) or what have you, he knew it. He got paid for it.
Nobody was going to walk in on George Lucas’ office. Then imagine walking into George picking up all his stories and intellectual property and saying “all mine” without paying one cent!
You would think somebody is crazy without any formal agreements, negotiation, payments, or transfer of services. Unlike many city streets, George Lucas wouldn’t be gullible or con out of his rights over intellectual property (i.e. writings, his stories). Just because somebody took uninvited liberties in his office, doesn’t mean reasoning on this matter with sound integrity is lost.
You writers and artists around the world face a challenge with IP even when you don’t even realize it. There have been talented artists and poets who were convince at times to do it for the love of the craft. While they put out into the world great stuff without pay, someone else who was on it (knowledge and connections) was capitalizing from these starving artists(The Vincent van Gogh) talents.
If anyone ever states: “You had your chance!” I tell you what Vincent van Gogh talents in the world, this may not be the case at all!
I want you to realize dear reader that I have talked about challenges you and I face in the world through my podcast; so I won’t be doing it here.
