Title Bit of History: Cecil B. DeMille
Cecil B. DeMille, born on August 12, 1881, in Ashfield, Massachusetts, was a pioneering American film director and producer. In 1913, he co-founded the forerunner of Paramount Communications with Jesse Lasky and Samuel Goldwyn. Their inaugural project, The Squaw Man (1914), stands as one of Hollywood’s first full-length feature films, establishing DeMille’s directorial prowess. He became renowned for his biblical spectacles like The Ten Commandments (1923, remade 1956) and The King of Kings (1927). DeMille was celebrated for his flamboyant style, often employing vast casts and elaborate sets. His filmography, exceeding 70 works, also includes Samson and Delilah (1949) and the Academy Award-winning The Greatest Show on Earth (1952).
